The Past, The Present, The Future II
— 35 years of Luxembourg Maritime Law
The art piece story:
This commemorative piece is conceived in the spirit of the Ways of Life series, where the interior of a home becomes a symbolic stage for memory, identity, and projection into the future. Celebrating 35 Years of Luxembourg Maritime Law, this painting was conceived and created by the artist Axelle Salvage in 2026, and presented during the 9th edition of the Gala des Armateurs organized by the Luxembourg Maritime Cluster on April 29, 2026, at Le Royal Luxembourg Hotel.
This artwork was presented with honor as a gift from the Luxembourg Maritime Cluster to the Luxembourg Maritime Administration — Ministry of Economy.
Description of the piece:
Here, the domestic setting represents more than a private space: it evokes Luxembourg itself, a place in which the maritime sector has progressively found its place over the past 35 years. Anchored within the house, maritime life is presented as part of a broader national story — integrated, living, and evolving.
• Foreground and middle ground:
The composition unfolds through a rich dialogue of objects, figures, and artworks. In the foreground, a dog holds an hourglass while watching three butterflies in red, blue, and white, echoing the colours of Luxembourg. Around them, pink petals continue to fall, carrying movement and continuity through the scene. Together, these elements suggest the passage of time, the vitality of the present, and the openness of the future. In the middle ground, a seated figure reads books titled MLC and USV, references to maritime law and innovation in the sector. Nearby, a blank white canvas, brushes, and paint bottles evoke what is still to be imagined and built. A second white dog, marked with paint after playing among anniversary decorations, introduces a playful and lively energy, while a small skateboard discreetly points toward youth and the importance of making the maritime field attractive to younger generations.
• Background:
The background brings together a constellation of symbols linking Luxembourg, maritime heritage, and artistic memory. A lion pendulum, an anchor, the red lion, the Luxembourg flag, and the maritime flag all reinforce the dialogue between national identity and seafaring history. Two large paintings — one of Luxembourg City with the Adolphe Bridge and Spuerkeess tower, the other of an old sailing vessel — place the country and the maritime world side by side. Smaller paintings quoting Waterfall I, Waterfall II, and Waterfall III insert the artist’s own visual language into the composition, alongside other hidden elements, while also affirming her place within this commemorative gesture. The chimney, marked with a ship’s wheel, the references to Melusine and the Gëlle Fra, the three plant pots standing like a crew, the balloons, and the golden 35 all contribute to a celebratory interior in which history, culture, and imagination coexist.
Through this scene, the painting suggests that after 35 years, Luxembourg maritime law is no longer perceived as distant or abstract, but as something rooted within the country’s institutional and symbolic home.
