Girl II — Mixed Media Sketch by Axelle Salvage | 2025
Girl II is the mirrored companion to Girl I, presenting the same contemplative figure from an alternate perspective — literally reversed from left to right. This deliberate mirroring creates a fascinating dialogue between the two pieces, inviting viewers to consider how perspective shifts our understanding of the same subject. The composition maintains the same essential elements: the seated female figure rendered in confident pen lines on white paper, and the explosive orange oil pastel bursts that suggest internal emotional energy.
The mirroring effect transforms the viewing experience — what was on the left now appears on the right, creating a sense of reflection, duality, or perhaps two moments in time. When displayed together, Girl I and Girl II create a powerful diptych effect, suggesting conversation, reflection, or the multiplicity of self. Alone, Girl II stands as its own meditation on human presence and emotional expression.
Artistic Significance: The decision to create a mirrored version speaks to Salvage's interest in perspective, duality, and how subtle shifts in composition can alter meaning. This approach — creating variations on a theme — echoes her Birds of Salvage watercolor series, where the same character appears in different chromatic identities. Here, the same figure exists in two spatial realities, suggesting themes of reflection, alternate selves, or the impossibility of a single fixed identity.
